Supreme Court verdict on Cauvery shocking, says Kamal Haasan

Kamal Haasan

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s final verdict on Cauvery river water dispute, actor Kamal Haasan, who will be launching a political party in five days’ time, said the reduction of 14.75 tmcft of Cauvery water (awarded by the tribunal) due to Tamil Nadu was “shocking’ and “disappointing”.

“As all farmers in Tamil Nadu would be, I am also shocked at the reduction in the supply of water. What is consoling is that Supreme Court has firmly said that water cannot be owned by either State and that it belongs to everyone,” said Mr. Haasan.

“Though Tamil Nadu is set to receive a reduced quantum of Cauvery water from Karnataka, it is our (Tamil Nadu’s) responsibility to conserve water. The political parties shouldn’t kindle emotions to harvest votes,” Mr. Haasan said.

The actor added that violent protests cannot ensure Karnataka government will implement the verdict. “It cannot be ensured by violent protests. Both the States — Karnataka and Tamil Nadu — should speak with each other and resolve differences. The idea of inter-linking of rivers is possible only when there is unity between two sides. We need to speak with each other, not fight. It will affect both the sides,” he said.

Disappointing, says Rajini

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s verdict, actor Rajinikanth said in a tweet: “The final Supreme Court verdict in the Cauvery water sharing dispute appears to further affect the lives of farmers. It is disappointing. The Tamil Nadu government must file a review petition.”
