Coinciding with the ‘Swachh Bharat’ mission launched by the Modi government at the Centre, DHAN Foundation, a non-governmental organisation organised a walkathon, focussing on ‘Green and Clean’ theme.
More than 2,000 students from 20 schools and four colleges in the district and members of self help groups took part in the walkathon, carrying placards, calling upon the people to keep their living areas green and clean.
Warning about various environmental problems faced by villages and cities in the country, the students exhorted the people to keep both public utilities and common properties clean and green to lead a healthy life.
The walkathon was organised to instil a sense of cleanliness and concept of greening in the minds of public and to encourage them to keep their dwelling places and public utilities clean, Foundation coordinator G. Palanikumar said.
The walkathon flagged off by District Revenue Officer (DRO) S. Viswanathan at Raja’s Higher Secondary School culminated at the Schwartz Higher Secondary School. In a move to promote greenery, the DRO planted saplings on the school premises. The Foundation distributed about 200 saplings to all the participant schools and colleges and urged the students to make their school and college premises green, he said.
