January 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:10 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

The Kalingapatti Students Forum organised a blood donation camp in the birthplace of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko on Saturday.

Since hospitals in Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli districts are receiving dengue patients in dire need of platelets transfusion, the forum organised the camp which was inaugurated by Mr. Vaiko. “The blood will be used to save patients undergoing treatment in government hospitals. Through this camp, we also want to educate the public, especially the youths, about the harmful effects of liquor, the worst threat Tamil Nadu is facing now,” Mr. Vaiko, also the founder president of Marumalarchi Blood Donors’ Club, said.

He appealed to his party functionaries to organise blood donation camps across south Tamil Nadu to save the poor dengue patients.

Around 160 donors, including 10 girl students, donated blood.

Medical Officer of Sankarankovil Government Hospital Sungantha Kumari and her team collected the blood.

President of Kalingapatti panchayat and younger brother of Mr. Vaiko, V. Ravichandran, among others, participated in the camp.
