Making it clear that no school student would be allowed to come to school or go to private tuition in two-wheeler as they could not be given driving licence, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, S. Murugan has said the school managements should monitor the violators and take stringent measures to curb such violations.

Addressing an awareness programme held here for heads of schools on Saturday, Dr. Murugan said the school students, who could not be given driving licence owing to underage, should not be allowed to come to schools or go for private tuitions in bikes. The parents should realize the serious problems involved in this violation as they could not even claim insurance in case of fatal accidents involving their underage children.

Besides strictly banning two-wheeler riding by underage students, the school teachers should also monitor whether their students were parking their bikes in the nearby campus and coming to school.

As per the recent directive from the State Government, both the rider and the pillion rider should wear quality helmets, which was essential for ensuring their safety.

“Any violation in this connection – underage youths riding bikes and helmetless riding by the rider and pillion rider – will attract punitive punishments including seizure of driving licence,” Dr. Murugan said.

The DIG said the school teachers and the heads should immediately inform the police about the frictions among the students in the name of caste, religion or due to ragging so that timely action could be taken to nip the issue in the bud.

Earlier, Dr. Murugan and senior police officials including Deputy Commissioners, Tirunelveli City, T.P. Suresh Kumar (Law and Order) and Rajan (Crime and Traffic) distributed to public the pamphlets explaining the need for wearing helmet while riding two-wheelers.
