Thanks to heavy flow in rivers and sharp showers in the catchments

Storage level has been increasing continuously in major dams in the district owing to heavy flow in rivers and sharp showers in the catchments.

Water level rose by one or two feet in every 48 hours in Periyar and Vaigai dams. Storage level was 135.4 feet in Periyar dam with a comfortable inflow of 2,213 cusecs. But the discharge was restricted to 511 cusecs. With heavy flow into Vaigai dam, the PWD was not in a hurry to withdraw more water from Periyar dam.

Level in Vaigai dam touched 63.85 feet owing to flood in Kottakudi, Periyar and Vaigai rivers. Inflow was 2,856 cusecs and discharge 60 cusecs.

Already, Sothuparai, Manjalar and Shanmuga Nadhi dams have water till brim. Entire flow into these dams was released into rivers. About 540 cusecs was discharged from Manjalar dam and 135 cusecs from Sothuparai dam.

However, rainfall came down sharply in the district on Saturday night. Minor showers recorded in some parts of the district on Sunday.

Collector N. Venkatachalam inspected Vaigai dam and a new bridge constructed near Kunoor and assessed the situation.

Rainfall recorded at various places in mm was: Andipatti 7.4, Aranmanaipudhur 3, Bodi 2, Goodalur 3, Manjalar dam, 7, Periyakulam 5, Vaigai dam 5.2, Sothuparai dam 4, Uthamapalayam 5, Thekkadi 2.4, Veerapandi 8 and Periyar 5.

Dindigul

Athoor dam surplussed on Saturday evening as water level crossed its full capacity of 24 feet. Excess water has been over flowing through surplus weir. Dindigul would not face water crisis in this summer, said Corporation officials. Kodaikanal lake has also been overflowing for the past two days owing to increasing flow in all streams and falls down hill.

With sharp increase in storage in Vaigai dam, flood warning was issued to wayside villages along Vaigai channel and river in Nilakottai block. Dindigul recorded 27.72 mm rainfall and Nilakottai 10 mm.
