Condemning the alleged irregularities in desilting of Srivaikundam dam, farmers and members of various organisations, under the banner of Srivaikundam Dam Desilting Work Development Committee, staged a demonstration in front of the Public Works Department office here on Wednesday.

The protestors said that the contractor identified by the PWD for the work was taking only sand to be sold at a premium instead of removing silt that got deposited on the dam bed over the past several decades. Even after the National Green Tribunal had ordered the PWD not to sell the sand removed from the dam, the sale was going on, they alleged.
