Will ask committee to monitor flow of water at Biligundlu

Tamil Nadu would impress upon the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) at Monday’s meeting to ensure apportioning of the State’s monthly quota of water in three equal instalments.

The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee should also monitor the flow of water, which is being measured at Biligundlu on the border of Tamil Nadu-Karnataka.

This was decided at a meeting that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami held on Friday with his Ministers and officials at the Secretariat.

Among those who took part in the meeting were O. Panneerselvam, Deputy Chief Minister; K.A. Sengottaiyan, Education Minister; P. Thangamani, Power Minister; R. Doraikannu, Agriculture Minister; R. Kamaraj, Food Minister; O.S. Manian, Handlooms Minister; D. Jayakumar, Fisheries Minister and C. Ve. Shanmugam, Law Minister.

The reference to the 10-day period has been made on the basis of a notification by Union Ministry for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation on the CWMA formation recently.

Integrated operation

According to the notification, eight reservoirs in the Cauvery basin would have to be operated “in an integrated manner” by States concerned under the guidance of the authority for 10 days throughout the year for meeting the requirements of irrigation and other purposes.

The State may also urge the authority to include in the rules of business, which are likely to be finalised on Monday, for holding emergency meetings, if required.

The Central Water Commission might be requested by the State at Monday’s meeting to post eligible engineers to eight reservoirs.

Tamil Nadu would agree to provide ₹ 80 lakh towards its share of cost of the Authority.
