State govt. failed to exert pressure on Centre: Stalin

‘Claim to seek clarification on scheme at last minute a lame excuse’

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam working president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin on Friday charged that the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government had failed to exert pressure on the Centre to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and had thus surrendered the rights of Tamil Nadu. The DMK would hold an all-party meeting in Chennai to discuss protests against the inaction of the Central government in constituting the CMB as directed by the Supreme Court.

Accusing the AIADMK government of working “overtime” to please the BJP government, Mr. Stalin said the Chief Minister should stop working for the benefit of the BJP, whose decisions on the Cauvery issue “were motivated by the [impending] elections to the Karnataka Assembly.”

“The Chief Minister should file a contempt of court petition against the Centre for not abiding by the ruling of the Supreme Court and not constituting the CMB,” he said.

‘Comrade in arms’

“As far as the Cauvery water issue is concerned, both the BJP and the AIADMK behave like comrades in arms when it comes to cheating Tamil Nadu,” he charged.

The DMK executive council said the situation had come to such a pass since the State government ignored Mr. Stalin’s warning that the State government should be careful about the “scheme” mentioned in the Supreme Court order.

“The claim of the government that it is going to seek clarification on the scheme at the last minute is nothing but a lame excuse. The AIADMK also ridiculed Mr. Stalin’s suggestion for mass resignation of MPs to bring pressure on the Centre,” the resolution said.
