DMK members evicted en masse from the House

DMK members were on Monday evicted enmasse from the Assembly after acrimonious exchange of words between party treasurer M.K. Stalin and Ministers after he made a remark on Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam.

Speaking in the debate on the second supplementary estimates for the current financial year, Mr. Stalin, quoting statistics, said while the former Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, had announced projects worth over Rs 30,000 crore under Rule 110 of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the corresponding allocation numbers in the estimate was much lower. Thus, he sought to know the status of the announcements.

Mr. Panneerselvam intervened with an elaborate reply, during which he also accused the DMK members of lacking in patience to understand what was explained during a call attention motion.

In the meantime, in response to a swipe the Chief Minister took on the previous DMK government, Mr. Stalin made a pointed remark on Mr. Panneerselvam, which was later expunged.

This led to a face-off between the DMK and AIADMK members.

The former were on their feet and raised slogans after Housing Minister R. Vaithilingam made some remarks about DMK president M. Karunanidhi’s family members. Some DMK MLAs then proceeded to the well of the House to confront Speaker P. Dhanapal, who constantly warned of action against those disrupting the House. Triplicane-Chepauk MLA J. Anbazhagan was seen angrily gesturing the Assembly Secretary A.M.P Jamaludeen. While Mr. Anbazhagan was first evicted on the orders of the Speaker, the marshals were then ordered to remove all DMK members from the House.
