He promises to include farmers’ issues in manifesto

October 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - TIRUVARUR:

The DMK treasurer, M.K. Stalin, on Friday assured farmers that they would get a better deal under the DMK regime as the party had been in the vanguard of protecting their interests.

Under his Namakku Naame programme, Mr. Stalin interacted with sugarcane and paddy growers at Ullikkottai and Mela Nagai villages in Tiruvarur district and responded to farmers’ demand for remunerative price for their produce to meet the growing cost of agricultural inputs and other factors such as labour shortage.

Farmers complained that dredging operations were not carried out properly and in time and as a result water for irrigation was not available for tail-end farmers during the critical period of cultivation. They pleaded with the former Deputy Chief Minister for granting them Rs. 3,500 a quintal for paddy. Mr. Stalin promised to consider their demands and include them in the poll manifesto.

In Tiruvarur, he walked through the main bazaar shaking hands with people and greeting them. He interacted with retired government employees and teachers.
