DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Wednesday made a strong case for the constitution of a State security commission as per the recommendations of the Supreme Court, saying it was essential to prevent what he called the degeneration of the State police department.

In a statement here, he said the Commission’s was necessary for evolving a policy for the efficient functioning of the police department and to win the confidence of people.

“Since the Commission will include the Home Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, chairpersons of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission and the Minorities Commission, the Chief Secretary and the Home Secretary, it can offer constructive guidelines for the police department,” he added.

Mr. Stalin said since the report of the Commission would be placed in the Assembly every year, it would pave way for constructive discussion in the House. “Chief Secretary Girija Vaidhyanathan should immediately take steps to constitute the Commission,” he said.

Pointing out that the DGP was also additionally holding the charge of the intelligence department, he said IGs handling law and order issues were not able to bring the failure of SPs to the notice of the DGP.

“Today, the police department is just carrying out political work and not able to concentrate on intelligence work,” he alleged.
