Stalin elected DMK president, Duraimurugan made treasurer

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) working president M.K. Stalin was on Tuesday unanimously elected president of the party at a meeting of its general council.

Party's Principal Secretary Duraimurugan was elected its treasurer.

“As no one else has filed the nomination, Mr. Stalin is elected for the post,” said party general secretary K. Anbazhagan.

A total of 1907 persons either proposed or seconded Mr. Stalin's name. In the case of Mr. Duraimurugan, 252 persons proposed and seconded his name, he said.

 

Recalling the late party president, M. Karunanidhi’s words “though I have not done anything as a father to Stalin, he had honoured me as a son,” Mr. Anbazhagan said Mr. Stalin, who was incarcerated during Emergency, became the Mayor of Chennai in 1996 and a Minister in the DMK government in 2006 and Deputy Chief Minister in 2009.

A resolution adopted at the meeting urged the Central governent to confer Bharata Ratna on Karunanidhi.
