Stage artistes in the district staged a demonstration here on Monday urging the authorities to lift the ban on their presentations.

“Citing vulgarity in some performances that happened elsewhere in the State, the police administration stopped giving permissions to us to perform in temple festivals, marriage functions and political meetings about two-and-a-half years ago.

The ban has plunged us into a predicament,” S. Tamilselvan, the secretary of Tirupur District Stage Artistes Association, told reporters here.

“With the ban existing here, we are forced to travel long distances to those districts where the ban is not there,” said K. David, another artiste.

The artistes suggested that if the ban could not be lifted the district administration should at least arrange government jobs according to the educational qualification of the individuals.

They also gave a representation to Collector G. Govindaraj on the day.
