Sri Lankan Navy arrests 43 Indian fishermen

Five trawlers in their possession were also seized

The Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday arrested 43 Indian fishermen on charges of poaching off Jaffna peninsula.

Five trawlers in their possession were seized, Navy spokesperson Kosala Warnakulasuriya told The Hindu.  

The fishermen were arrested north-east of Point Pedro, along the northern tip of Jaffna peninsula, and later brought to Kankesanthurai, Navy officials said.

With Tuesday’s arrest, the total number of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody rose to 81, and the number of trawlers, to 87.
