Minister for Information Technology M. Manikandan has said he would take up with the Defence Ministry the question of Sri Lanka’s mobile phone service being available at Dhanushkodi and Arichamunai in Rameswaram island, and check if this posed any security threat. Asked about the availability of the connectivity of a mobile service provider in Sri Lanka in Dhanushkodi, he said although it had been reported that it was available for a long time, it was brought to his notice for the first time and he would take up the issue with the Defence Ministry.

Mr. Manikandan was not sure whether it posed a security threat to the country but said it would help the smugglers and anti-social elements to carry out illegal acts.

“We will look into the issue immediately,” he said.

Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena said he was also coming to know about this for the first time.
