Special Public Prosecutor appointed to conduct trial in Ayanavaram gang rape case

The State government on Thursday appointed central government standing counsel N. Ramesh as a Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) to conduct the trial against 17 individuals booked on the charge of raping an 11-year-old girl at Ayanavaram here on multiple occasions between January 15 and July 5.

Mr. Ramesh had served as a Judicial Magistrate from November 2003 to March 2009 when he resigned the job and resumed legal practice. He is also currently a Special Public Prosecutor for the Directorate of Enforcement in the High Court apart from holding the post of central government standing counsel.

According to a Government Order issued by the Home Department in connection with the gang-rape case, the SPP shall be paid a daily fee of ₹2,500 for every appearance in the case apart from a study fee of ₹15,000 which shall be paid in three instalments.

The first instalment shall be paid after filing of chargesheet, the second after framing of charges and the third at the time of final arguments.
