Sound arguments decide cases: Justice Navin Sinha

Supreme Court Justice Navin Sinha on Saturday said that a strong foundation and sound arguments decide outcomes in superior courts.

“It is as simple as this. For a building which has a strong foundation, the super structure would be excellent. But with a weak foundation, a fancy super structure also won’t last,” he said at the inauguration of the 12th Annual International Taxation Conference 2019 in Chennai.

The conference was organised by the International Fiscal Association India Branch- Southern Regional Chapter, Chennai.

Justice Sinha also told the tax professionals to take a wide ambit and think of all the possibilities that can arise in a case to the best possible extent. “This calls for lot of hard work, constant reading and updating your knowledge. That is one thing where we are slipping,” he added.

Mr. Sinha also told young tax professionals to actively take part in training programmes and not hesitate to clarify their doubts.

He gave an example of how when he was a High Court Judge and did not understand a tax case, so he asked the leading tax lawyer arguing the case to help him understand. “I had no difficulty in deciding the case, after the lawyer argued the case the whole day,” Mr. Sinha said.
