Income tax officials conducted search operations at six jewellery shops in Vellore district on the eve of ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ on Tuesday.

More than three teams were involved in the search operations. These operations were believed to be the outcome of tax evasion by the respective shops during the previous years.

Search operations carried out at three shops in Tirupattur Jinnah Road and Alangayam Road continued overnight. Similarly, shops of two major dealers of gold and diamonds in Ambur were subjected to searches. Customers were allowed to get out of the shops after thorough checks.

A shop on Gandhi Road was raided by officials on Monday evening. The search operations were completed during early hours on Tuesday.

Officials were tight-lipped on the searches. It was a big set back for the jewellers as they were preparing for a mega sale on account of ‘Akshaya Tritiya’, said a jeweller from Ambur.
