After slipping to the eighth rank at the State level last year, Sivaganga district bounced back to emerge as the topper with an overall pass percentage of 98.50 in SSLC examinations, the results of which were declared on Wednesday. Ramanathapuram district slipped from the third to the fifth slot.

Sivaganga district, which had secured the seventh rank in 2016 with an overall pass percentage of 96.66, slipped to the eighth position in 2017 though improving the pass percentage by 0.36%. This year, though there were expectations that the district would improve its performance, the top rank came as a pleasant surprise for officials.

“For the first time, we have secured the first rank in overall pass percentage at the State level and we are happy about this,” said Collector G. Latha. She congratulated the Chief Educational Officer, District Educational Officers, heads and teachers of all schools and students and exhorted them to maintain the winning streak.

In all, 18,837 students from 275 government and private schools appeared for the examinations and 18,555 of them passed, she said, adding 183 schools, including 80 government and 34 aided schools, recorded 100% pass.

Ramanathapuram district hogged the limelight last year, securing the second rank at the State level in Plus Two examinations and the third position in SSLC examinations. This year, the district slipped to the fifth slot in SSLC examinations with an overall pass percentage of 97.94 with a marginal fall of 0.22% from last year’s overall pass percentage of 98.16.

Collector S. Natarajan said the district would focus on weak areas and bounce back next year. He said the only solace was that the district secured the second rank at the State level in the overall pass percentage in government schools. Among the government schools, the district stood second with an overall pass percentage of 97.68, he said.

A total of 17,265 students, including 8,692 girls from 251 schools, appeared for the examinations and 16,910 of them passed. As usual, girls outshone boys, recording a pass percentage of 98.93 in the district. He said 156 schools, including 77 government and 20 aided schools, recorded 100% pass.
