Shift employment office to new building: Congress MLA

Congress MLA S. Vijayadharini demanded the government to shift the district employment office to the new building constructed in Konam in Nagercoil.

Ms. Vijayadharini said that the new building was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.5 crore. Though the work had been completed six months ago, the employment office was functioning from a rental premises. The old building lacks basic amenities including parking lot for vehicles, causing hardship to the differently abled and women.

The MLA also said that the district employment office had been functioning with skeletal staff.

Only seven employees were working against the sanctioned strength of 25. Moreover, the renewal and new registration work was affected due to online connectivity problem at the employment office. Due to this, people from places like Vilavancode were affected, she alleged.

The department was paying a rent of Rs. 11,625 per month. Though the plinth area of the new three-storeyed building was 12,000 square feet and it stood on 25 cents of land, it remained under lock, an official said.

Ms. Vijayadharini alleged that new buildings constructed for the District Industries Centre, Amma Canteens constructed inside Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital,

Vadaseri bus stand and elsewhere in the district were all kept closed for the last six months.
