Seven persons including five students were detained for questioning for allegedly kidnapping a college student and demanding ransom on Friday night.

According to the police, the students belong to a private polytechnic college in the Katpadi region. The victim was identified as Gokul, 19, son of Kennedy, who works abroad as an engineer. According to a complaint lodged with the police, Gokul did not return home on Friday. It came to light that he was kidnapped by a group when one of the students called Gokul’s mother from the latter’s mobile.

The group had Gokul in custody and demanded ransom worth ₹3 lakh. The family immediately alerted the local police, and three special teams began a search. Gokul’s family in the meantime negotiated with the callers, with police simultaneously attempting to track the caller’s location.
