Set up more colleges: CPI(M)

January 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - PUDUKOTTAI:

The district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the state government to take steps for inter-linking the Cauvery, the Vaigai and the Kundaru so as to provide assured irrigation facility to farmers of this district district.

A resolution adopted at its district conference here on Thursday said the underground water table in several parts of the district had gone down.

Another resolution urged the Centre to start a wing of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Pudukottai to cater to the healthcare needs of the people of the district. In the absence of the comprehensive healthcare facility, residents largely depended on hospitals in Madurai, Thanjavur or Tiruchi.

The meeting urged the State government to establish government medical and engineering colleges as announced in the budget. It also wanted government arts colleges to be set up at Alangudi, Gandarvakottai and Iluppur and construction of buildings for the Government Arts College at Aranthangi.

The meet urged the Central and state government to take concerted efforts for overall economic development of the district. It sought new rail links between Manapparai and Pattukottai via Viralimalai and Alangudi, and from Thanjavur to Madurai via Gandarvakottai and Ponnamaravathy. Another resolution wanted upgrade of the Alangudi and Ponnamaravathy into municipalities.

M. Chinnadurai, district secretary of the party, read out the resolutions which were adopted unanimously.

A. Lazar, MLA, S. Rajasekaran, former MLA, and U. Vasuki, central committee member of the party, were among those who spoke.
