Although a year has passed after opening the new bridge across Kudamurutti along the Vayalur Road, action has not been taken to lay the service road, adjacent to the southern side of the bridge connecting the Vayalur Road from the eastern side of the newly built bridge with the eastern bank of Kudamurutti river. This was the easy and short route for reaching Government General Hospital, Collector's Office, District Court, Kuzhumayi Amman Temple, and Kamala Niketan School. But encroachments on the site meant for service road has forced motorists to take a circuitous route. Encroachments should be evicted and the service road laid at the earliest.

Improve infrastructure

Although Tiruchi got the status of a corporation 18 years ago, it still is a city with civic problems galore. The Uyyakondan canal has become the biggest gutter of the city. The historic Gandhi Market has become a garbage mound. The central bus stand and the Chattiram Bus Stand without any infrastructure have become an eye sore and a disgrace to the city. Even slight rain makes the badly maintained roads unfit for motoring. Poor garbage clearance leaves the city is stinking. In spite of all these maladies, the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation is venturing into erecting AC bus shelters, though most of the bus halts are without shelters.

Change attitude

Recently for a travel of barely one km from Ratna Stores to Butterworth Road entrance, the autorickshaw driver refused to charge meter rate. Instead, he charged Rs. 50. On being told that he has to abide by the meter rate fixed by the government and reducing price of petrol he asserts that it is not viable. The licence of the erring drivers should be cancelled immediately. Further autos must be made to carry a board informing that they charge meter fare only.

App for auto

Despite the authorities’ Herculean efforts, meter auto system has not found favour with all sections of drivers in the city. Solution lies in letting private operators willing to run metered auto through online apps like Uber. Competition in essential services such as public transport, instead of municipal garbage clearance, will force the unwilling auto drivers to fall in line with the rest.

AC bus shelter

The air-conditioned bus stop at Gandhi Market is occupied mostly by the local people and commuters are forced to wait in the sun. Moreover, it is a congested area and passengers cannot see the buses from inside the shelter. A redesigned a/c bus shelter that offers a clear view of the buses will be more useful.

Speed-breaker needed

Traffic on the Vayalur Road is increasing everyday. Vehicles prefer to pass through Ramalinga Nagar South Extension to reach Vayalur Road. Hence traffic on this road has increased considerably. Nine cross roads are connected to the First Main Road and there is a high probability of collision of vehicles at the meeting points. The Fifth Cross Road gets extended over a bridge built for the benefit of students of Spastics Society. Thus, a four-road junction has been formed near the fifth cross road. A speed-breaker should be built.

Drain at a blind spot

A heap of solid wastes that got accumulated months ago has choked the drainage completely causing a health hazard on Railway Station Road in Srirangam. Complaints regarding this overflowing drain have fallen on deaf ears. It is shameful that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is insisting on clean India, we are yet to achieve full sanitation. I request the authorities concerned to clean the over-flowing drain.

Civic problems galore

Problems with regard to clearance of garbage, indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste and wilful discharge of sewage into storm water drains continue to plague Seshadripuram/Subramaniapuram areas of Srirangam. The number of garbage bins provided in the area is inadequate. With the ban on plastic carry bags remaining only on paper dumping of plastic waste on the roadside continues unabated. Unauthorised construction of structures above the storm-water drain facilitates discharge of sewage into it. It is baffling that despite repeated representations, concrete action has not been taken. Are the corporation officials waiting for outbreak of any contagious diseases?

Building violations

Certain residential areas such as Periyar Nagar and Mangamma Nagar were developed by the Cooperative Building Society in 1965. As per rule, individual plots cannot be sub divided. But now we find builders boldly venturing into making five apartments on one ground area. This puts a strain on infrastructure. Will the district authorities come to the rescue of individual house dwellers?

Kallanai

Kallanai is a major tourist place in Tiruchi. The road from NH45 to Kallanai (near Cauvery dam) is in bad shape. There are no street lights installed on the 12-km long road. Since many tourists visit Kallanai dam and devotees visit Sai Baba Temple on the road, it should be made safe.

Residents of Tiruchi are hard put to find entertainment spots during holidays. Going to a cinema has become unaffordable. The parks are uninspiring. Kallanai is one recreation spot with renovated park, manimandapam and so on. However the telescope tower and water games are waiting for a VIP to inaugurate them.

Pay enhanced

medical allowance

Railways is having the largest number of pensioners in the public sector group. Recently, the Family Medical Allowance has been enhanced from Rs. 300 to Rs. 500 to the pensioners from November 2014. While most banks such as the IOB, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, and Indian Bank have credited the amount into the pension account, the State Bank of India has not credited the amount.

Clear debris

A few years ago, a temple of Lord Anjaneya near the crossing of tollgate (Samayapuram) was demolished on the pretext that it was causing traffic congestion. Although the temple has been demolished, the debris remains causing hindrance to road users.
