Self-immolation bid by woman at Collectorate

June 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

A woman from Narasinganallur near here attempted to commit suicide on the Collectorate premises here on Monday in protest against the detention of her husband by the Udumalaipettai police.

Even as Collector M. Karunakaran was receiving petitions from the public at the District Development Council hall, a woman with two children made the attempt in front of the nearby admin building after sprinkling kerosene on her.

However, the police on duty there snatched the kerosene can from her and overpowered her.

During interrogation, V. Sivagami (28) from Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Narasinganallur told the police that her husband Velmurugan, a construction worker, was picked up by a police team from Udumalaipettai in Tirupur district from his house a couple of days ago for an enquiry pending against him in a case when he was working at Udumalaipettai.

“I am unable to contact my husband and I’m worried about his safety,” she said.

As the public in large number started gathering around her, she was whisked away in a police jeep along with her children. “She was let off with a warning,” a police officer said.
