Second phase of medical camp under way

Collector M. Karunakaran inaugurated the second phase of the ‘Mission Indra Dhanush’ vaccination programme in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Vijila Sathyananth at Konganthaanpaarai near here on Wednesday to protect babies from poor families from eight dreaded diseases.

The Collector said that 13,702 babies and 3,337 poor pregnant women were vaccinated to protect them from polio, tuberculosis, jaundice, pneumonia, measles, diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus through 5,658 special camps held in the first phase between April and July last.

The camps were organised mainly to cover the babies of construction workers, labourers working in brick kilns and migrant labourers and pregnant women.

The second phase of the camps would be conducted for nine days (till October 15) in the primary health centres, health sub-centres, schools and anganvadis at 2,281 spots for the benefit of hitherto uncovered babies and pregnant women, Dr. Karunakaran said.

The Collector also flagged off the anti-dengue awareness rally at Konganthaanpaarai.

Deputy Director of Health Services S. Ram Ganesh was present.

Negercoil

In Kanyakumari district, the first phase would cover 6000 newborns and 300 pregnant women, said Collector Sajjansingh R Chavan in Nagercoil on Wednesday.

The campaign in Kanyakumari Health Unit Division (HUD) was inaugurated in an Anganwadi at Vadiveeswaram. Inaugurating the campaign, Mr. Chavan said that the first round of the campaign will be held up to October 14.

Each phase would be held for a week beginning October 7, November 7, December 7, 2015 and January 7, 2016.

Nagercoil MLA Nanjil A. Murugesan, Deputy Director of Health Services M. Madhusoodhanan, ICDS Project Officer T. Rajkumar, Assistant Director of the Department of Statistics Sundara Velvalli, doctors from Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital and officials were present.
