TN rural households richer in mobiles, two-wheelers

Compared to the all-India level, the rural households in the State have more mobile phones and two-wheelers.

According to the provisional SECC data of Rural India, the percentage of landless households deriving income from manual and casual labour is quite steep in the State compared to the all-India level of 38.27 per cent.

But when it comes to households with two-wheelers, while the national average is 17.43 per cent, it is 29.91 per cent in the State. Similarly, while the national average of households with mobile phone was 68.35 per cent, in Tamil Nadu it is 78.46 per cent.

While villagers from Tamil Nadu landing government job is marginally lower than the all-India average, more from the rural households in the State join the private sector. Percentage of rural households having refrigerators is 12.13, marginally higher than the national average.

One disturbing trend though is in the ownership of irrigated land. While the total rural households owning irrigated land in the country is 25.63 per cent, in Tamil Nadu it is only 12.10 per cent.

Worse, while the national percentage of total SC households owning irrigated land is 17.47, in Tamil Nadu only 5.01 of the SC households own irrigated land.
