Sea erosion reported

Sea erosion and incursion in places of worship and houses were reported in coastal villages near Thengaipattinam and Colachel on Friday.

Due to high tide, sea water touched the Colachel bridge. Groynes constructed along the coastal villages were also affected in several places, sources said. Fishermen did not venture into sea for fishing. Sea water incursion in places of worship was reported in Muloorthurai, Kottilpadu and a few other coastal villages near Thengaipattinam, Colechel, Mandaicaud Pudur, Simon Colony, Kurumbanai, Vaniyakudi and Kodimunai habitations.

Due to high tide and incessant rain, wall collapse was reported in Colachel.

Sea water entered habitations in Pillaithoppu and Azhikkal . Due to this, fishermen families were shifted to a marriage hall. It was also reported that high tidewas noticed along Pudur and Thoothur. Parish Priest Fr. C. Raj of St. Lawrence Church, Mulloorthurai village of Thengaipattinam, said that two houses were damaged in the sea erosion and essential commodities stocked in a ration shop were shifted to a safer place.

Groynes constructed a decade ago were damaged due to frequent sea erosion and the houses of M. Vimal Raj and Laser in Mulloorthurai village were also damaged, Fr. Raj said.
