A scuffle broke out at an AIADMK meeting held for polling booth agents at Pudur in Vilathikulam, in the presence of Information and Publicity Minister Kadambur C. Raju here on Sunday.
Before the meeting began at a private wedding hall, a section of party members demanded that former MLA G.V. Markandeyan, said to be a supporter of MLA S.P. Shanmuganathan, be allowed to speak first. However, another section of party members wanted former MLA P. Chinnappan, a supporter of Mr. Raju, to deliver a speech.
Within minutes, a heated argument broke out, which spiralled into a brawl, with chairs being flung.
After Mr. Raju and others intervened, the workers dropped the fight. The police personnel on the Minister’s security detail also tried to bring about a truce between the belligerent groups.
The meeting, which began some time after the situation was brought under control, saw speeches by Mr. Raju and district secretary S.T. Chellapandian, before ending in just 10 minutes.
Earlier, a minor scuffle broke out at a party meeting in Udangudi over the appointment of party functionaries — also in the presence of the Minister.
