Sanitary workers and overhead tank pump operators of village panchayats staged a demonstration in front of Tirunelveli railway junction on Tuesday to highlight their demands, including a minimum monthly salary of Rs. 15,000.

The protestors said that the State government should release the findings and recommendations of the Minimum Wages Determination Committee.

Besides revoking the ban on appointment of persons in conservancy worker vacancies, the government should register the sanitary workers under the health insurance scheme.

Services of those who joined the government service as tap operators and sanitary workers after 2000 should be regularised. Retired sanitary workers should be given gratuity and monthly pension of Rs. 4,000, they demanded.

S. Chinnasamy, district treasurer of Village Panchayat Overhead Operators’ Welfare Association, presided over the demonstration.
