S. Ayyar new State Election Commissioner

S. Ayyar, a former officer of the Indian Administrative Service, has been appointed State Election Commissioner.

His appointment follows the resignation of Syed Munir Hoda early this week.

The new SEC would be in the post for two years with effect from May 27, according to a government notification.

Dr. Ayyar, who holds a Ph.D. degree in Tamil, entered the government service in 1978 as a Group-I officer. Subsequently, when he became an IAS officer, he was allotted the 1989 batch.

For some weeks, he was the Madurai District Collector in 1996. One year later, he was made Karur Collector, the post he held for two years.

In 2001, he became the Director of Rural Development and when the State government decided to take over retail liquor shops in 2003, Dr. Ayyar was its choice for the post of Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation.

In 2006, following a regime change, he was transferred initially as Commissioner of Disciplinary Proceedings, Tirunelveli and later, Dr. Ayyar went to Coimbatore in the same post. He retired from government service in March 2010.
