RPF receives threat letter

The Railway Protection Force (RPF), Salem Division, has received an anonymous letter stating that a 15-member Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) team is planning to derail trains near Mecheri on Salem – Mettur section on August 15.

The letter, received by Assistant Commissioner Govindaraj on Friday, states that 15 local people residing in Mettur area were the insurgents planning to derail the Salem – Mettur passenger train and a goods train near Mecheri on August 15. The letter also named the 15 members belonging to Thangamapuri, Kovil and few villages in Mettur. The letter wanted the RPF to arrest the persons and prevent the derailment.

Sources said that a copy of the letter has been forwarded to City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj and Superintendent of Police G. Subbulakshmi for further action.

The police said that inquiries are being conducted in the villages in Mettur. Also, RPF personnel conducted inquiries in Mettur on Saturday.

Following the threat, RPF personnel intensified patrolling of the tracks in the sector.

Presently, Salem – Mettur Dam passenger train is operated daily in the sector apart from goods train that carries coal to Mettur Thermal Power Station.
