A total of 18,004 vehicle users were booked for various road rule violations in the city and the district police limits during the month of September.
While the city traffic police booked 8,530 persons for traffic violations, another 9,474 persons have been booked by the Salem District Police.
A total spot fine of Rs. 26.67 lakh was collected from them.
The city traffic police personnel conducted surprise check in different parts of the city and booked a maximum of 4,590 persons for riding two-wheelers without helmets; 514 for jumping traffic signals; 79 for drunken driving; 226 for one-way violations; 166 for parking vehicles in the non-parking areas; 142 for using vehicles without insurance cover; 288 auto drivers for not wearing uniforms; 169 for over-loading in auto-rickshaws; 115 for using mobile phones while driving and riding vehicles; 93 persons for over-speeding, 39 for driving cars without seat belts, 129 for riding two-wheelers with three persons and the rest for other violations.
A spot fine of Rs. 13.94 lakh was collected from them, police sources said.
In the Salem district police limits, 283 were booked for drunken driving, 518 for without possessing licence, 277 for failure to wear uniforms, 522 for over-loading, 301 for using powerful bulbs in the headlights and the rest for other traffic rule violations.
A spot fine of Rs. 12.73 lakh was collected from them, police said.
Sources said that the city and district police would continue to conduct surprise check this month too and called upon the vehicle users to strictly adhere to road rules.
