Two engineers of Public Works Department (Water Resources Organisation) were sentenced to undergo two years rigorous imprisonment (RI) and pay a fine of Rs. 12,000 each by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, P. Murugaiah, here on Thursday. A contractor was awarded two years RI and a fine of Rs. 6,000 .
The judgement was delivered in a case filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption against the PWD engineers and a contractor for cheating the government by way of raising a bill without desilting the Ananthankulam pond in Neendagarai, a village near Nagercoil during 2004-05.
Mr. Murugaiah awarded two years RI and a fine of Rs. 12,000 each to Assistant Executive Engineer Y.M. Mariya Alosious and Assistant Engineer K. Subramania Pillai and two years RI and a fine of Rs. 6,000 to the contractor P. Rajagopal.
All the three were released on bail after they paid the fine. They can go on appeal to the higher court on or before February 27.
