Retrenched workers take out rally

Union Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office V. Narayanasamy has criticised the N.R. Congress government for going back on its promise to reinstate retrenched workers.

Addressing a rally taken out by the workers here on Monday, Mr. Narayanasamy flayed the government for not fulfilling the assurance to reinstate them.

The N.R. Congress came to power promising to provide “people's government” but immediately after assuming office it removed around 4,000 staffers appointed during the tenure of V. Vaithilingam as Chief Minister.

After the Congress took up the issue, the Chief Minister promised to consider their demand. But, he has not fulfilled his promise till now, Mr. Narayanasamy said.

Mr. Vaithilingam, who is also Opposition leader, said the government cited financial constraint as the reason for removing the workers. “However, after the new government assumed office, Mr. Rangasamy has appointed a large number of people from his constituency in various government bodies,” Mr. Vaithilingam said.

He sought to know from the Chief Minister how he managed the funds to pay salary of the new workers.

Earlier, the workers took out a rally from Venketasubba Reddiar Statue to Rangapillai Street where the public meeting was held. A large number of Congress workers, including party legislators, took part in the rally.
