Retirement age of V-Cs of nine State varsities raised

The Governor has promulgated an ordinance

The government has raised the retirement age of Vice-Chancellors of nine State universities from 65 years to 70 through an ordinance.

As the Assembly is not in session, the Governor has promulgated an ordinance to amend Tamil Nadu Universities Laws with effect from July 14.

At present, the Vice-Chancellors of Bharathiar University, Bharathidasan University, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Alagappa University, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Periyar University, Tamil Nadu Open University, Thiruvalluvar University and Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University, can be in office up to the age of 65 as per the Acts of these universities.

Now, the government has decided to amend the Acts to raise the retirement age to 70 years on par with the Central Universities Act, 2009, “to utilise the knowledge gained by the academics for the enrichment of education in the State,” stated an explanatory note to the ordinance.
