Residents of 12 hamlets around Gangaikondan submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunakaran on Monday appealing to him not to include their villages in the recently announced Maanur taluk, considering their convenience.

In the petition, the villagers said their hamlets had been under the Tirunelveli taluk for the past several decades as per the existing revenue administration and getting the benefits only through Tirunelveli taluk. Since the Tirunelveli taluk was accessible to the public, thanks to the increased and direct bus services, the people were able to reach the taluk office without much difficulty.

If their hamlets were allotted to the recently announced Maanur taluk, it would badly affect the residents of the 12 villages mainly due to lack of direct bus service.

“If a resident from Gangaikondan has to go to Maanur, he will have to get down either at Thatchanallur or Vannarpet to take another bus to Maanur, which will cause him additional expenditure and consume more time. Hence, considering the practical difficulties to be encountered by 15,000-odd population, the Collector should not order the transfer of our hamlets to Maanur taluk from Tirunelveli taluk,” said S. Arulmani, president, Gangaikondan village panchayat. Villagers from Gangaikondan, Anaithalaiyoor, Anaithalaiyoor Marakkudi, Duraiyoor, Rajapathi, Vadakarai, Netaji Nagar, Punganoor, Aladipatti, Kottaiyadi, Paappaankulam and Kalaignar Colony submitted this petition and have sent a copy of it to the Chief Minister’s Special Cell.
