Rescued child workers fare well in Namakkal

As many as 19 child workers who were rescued from various unorganised units in the district have cleared Plus Two examinations successfully.

T. Prabhu, who was rescued from a textile shop at Pallipalayam in 2008, was admitted to a special school run under National Child Labour Project (NCLP) and was mainstreamed into regular school. He secured 483 marks in Class X examination and has scored 1,085 marks in the Plus Two examination. He wants to become a doctor.

Born to a weaver, G. Priya was rescued from a weaving unit in 2008 and was admitted to a special school. She has scored 1,026 marks and wants to be a chartered accountant.

A.B. Antony Jennit, Project Director, NCLP, said that 600 child workers were rescued from various units in the district in the past 12 years. Currently, 546 students are pursuing their basic education in 20 special schools run under the NCLP.

Assistance

These students are willing to pursue their higher education, but money is an impediment. They seek financial assistance from philanthropists for continuing their studies.
