The traditional fervour, march past and unfurling of the tricolour marked the 66th Republic Day celebrations in Tamil Nadu on Monday.

At about 8 a.m., Governor K. Rosaiah hoisted the flag near the Gandhi statue on the Marina, in the presence of Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and his Cabinet colleagues.

Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's visuals were prominent on all the tableaux of various departments of the State government while the present Chief Minister, Mr Panneerselvam, did not figure anywhere. Of all the departments, the Public (Elections) department was an exception as its tableau did not have the visual of the former Chief Minister.

Mr. Panneerselvam gave away awards and medals to recipients.
