Residents led by Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a protest at Kalingapatti by blocking road here on Saturday, seeking removal of a TASMAC shop.

Among the agitators, Mariammal (94), mother of Vaiko, general secretary of MDMK, and V. Ravichandran, president, Kalingapatti panchayat, also took part in the protest to remove the TASMAC shop at Kalingapatti.

The agitators felt the outlet was causing nuisance to the public and attempted to lock it. Tension prevailed for a while as the agitators were denied access to close down the shop. They raised slogans against the police and condemned the government for running TASMAC shops that ruin the lives of many people. Traffic along Kovilpatti-Rajapalayam road was affected as the protestors were steadfast in their demand to remove the shop.

Official sources said there was no petition from the residents of Kalingapatti seeking the removal of the liquor shop. However, officials from Revenue Department and police officers held talks with the protestors and tried to convince them to disperse.

Minnal Mohammed Ali, social media coordinator of MDMK, was among the protestors.
