Removal of special status to J&K: Southern districts on high alert

Security across the southern districts in Tamil Naduhas been beefed up following the Union Government's decision to remove the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of Indian Constitution.

“All vital installations, places of worship and crowded places have been brought under security blanket in Madurai city and all other districts in South Zone,” said Madurai City Commissioner of Police, S. Davidson Devasirvatham, who also holds additional charge of Inspector General of Police (South Zone).

Additional security has been provided at all markets, bus stands and railway stations. Striking police have been kept on high alert.

An elaborate security plan has been put in place with patrolling of specific areas, where troubles are anticipated, with four-wheelers and two-wheelers have been increased.

“High alert will continue till the next review of the situation,” Mr. Davidson said.

Railway Protection Force along with Government Railway Police have taken up track patrolling in Madurai.
