A remand prisoner, involved in about 10 cases, including a rape case, has escaped from police custody while being taken from Thiruvadanai to Madurai Central Jail.
M Siva alias Sathyakumar (22) was being taken to Madurai in a private bus on Friday evening when he wanted to attend nature’s call. When the bus reached Kalayarkoil bus stand in Sivaganga district, the two escort policemen allowed him to use the public toilet at the bus stand.
The prisoner scaled over the compound wall of the toilet on the other side and jumped out to escape under the cover of darkness, police said. Police alerted all the check-posts in the district and nab him, police said.
The Rameswaram police have brought the prisoner hailing from Nagamalai Pudukottai in Madurai for interrogation in connection with two theft cases in Rameswaram temple and town police station limits.
After completing the interrogation, the police produced him before the Magistrate court in Thiruvadanai for obtaining Prisoner Transfer warrant as the Rameswaram Magistrate was on leave.
Besides the two cases in Rameswaram, the prisoner was facing four cases in Nagamalai Pudukottai, three in Dindigul and a rape case in Palani, police said.
