A reconstructive surgery at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital has given a new lease of life for the 24-year-old transgender, Abi, who sustained burns in an acid attack recently.
On April 26, 2015, her friend S. Prabhu threw acid on her leading to acid burns on her left shoulder, neck and arm.
She was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. A team led by D. Kannan, Head of Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with members M.K. Rajendran, S. Sivakumar, G. Gopalan, N. Kannan and M.D. Thenmozhi, all assistant professors, performed surgeries in a five-phased manner and skin grafting was carried out successfully. After intensive treatment at the burns ward, she was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday.
Dean N. Mohan told The Hindu that the victim’s skin not only was burned, but had also affected the muscle.
Using skin graft mesh and surgical dermatome, the team of doctors successfully performed repeated surgeries and the patient has completely recovered now, he added.
“The surgery could be very costly in other hospitals which we have done free of cost”, he added.
Thanking the dean and team of doctors, Abi said that after the incident she was thinking of even ending her life. “But now I got new life to live with boost in my confidence level”, she added.
