Blind turn at

Marudanallur

Kumbakonam-Mannargudi stretch is one of the busiest in Thanjavur district. With the Alangudi Guru temple attracting a large number of devotees, vehicular traffic is increasing day by day on this stretch.

At Marudanallur, 5 km away from Kumbakonam, there is a blind turn and collision of vehicles has become common.

I appeal to the officials concerned to take steps to put up a speed-breaker at this spot.

Sky high prices

In the early 60's, the salaries were low but happiness quotient was high. But today despite drawing large emoluments one cannot make both ends meet even after scrupulously curtailing unnecessary expenditure. Unrelenting inflation and sky-rocketing cost of living pose a great threat to the majority of the people keeping them perplexed about their future plans.

Nasty habit

It is disgusting to see lack of hygiene among some people. Recently, I saw a man spitting in the middle of the road at Kumbakonam market without any concern for the passersby. People need to be counselled on hygienic practices.

Cattle menace increasing

The cattle menace has been increasing on the roads of Thanjavur. It makes driving difficult as these cattle come in the way of driving and are posing a great danger to the drivers. Necessary action should be taken immediately.

Harvest rainwater

Not enough system has been put in place for rainwater harvesting. The district administration must step in immediately and clean up all water bodies. It should trace all the disappeared water bodies. New water bodies or check dams must be created wherever possible. Only check dams and rainwater harvesting systems can provide uninterrupted water supply to the future generations.

Avoidable accidents

The Irangalur fatal bus accident was manmade and could have been avoided if mandatory red lights at the protruding ends of iron sheets were in place and functioning.

The tail-end red lights, even if working, are of no use in such accidents. Sometime ago, a businessman’s family was killed in a car accident near the same spot. The traffic police to check vehicles for stop signal lights, bull’s eye headlights, drivers for inebriated driving, and over-speeding regularly

Driver’s fault

The fatal accident involving the SETC bus resulting in nine deaths near Samayapuram on Tuesday night appears to be the fault of the bus driver. The transport authorities must ensure that long-distance bus drivers are carefully chosen for their mental balance and poise as scores of lives are vested in their care.

Extend AIR

coverage

I live in Mayiladuthurai-Kumbakonam belt once known for its rich culture and tradition. The region has produced many great musicians. The best way to hear their music now is through radio. Unfortunately, not a single radio station is situated in this region. The only FM station at Karaikal is mostly commercial and its broadcast is limited to half an hour in the evening. AIR Tiruchi station is the nearest major centre. Can the AIR authorities do something to extend coverage to Mayiladuthurai-Kumbakonam region?

Extend train to Tiruchi

The Mohanur Rail Commuters Welfare Association has urged the railway authorities to extend the Chennai Egmore-Salem Express up to Karur ( The Hindu, October 16). Since there is no regular train from Tiruchi to Salem via Karur and Namakkal, the train could be extended up to Tiruchi so that people of four districts benefit from it.

Containing dengue

Now-a-days dengue fever is spreading fast in rural areas. The government should take action to control dengue fever by removing tyres and plastic cups from public places in rural areas.

Nomination and

legal heir papers

Nomination is asked for in government offices and in banks in lieu of legal heir certificates. While either one of them is sufficient, some departments insist on both. Will it stand the scrutiny of law? Pensioners are put to untold miseries because of this problem.
