Rajinikanth rules out contesting bypolls

Assembly election is his prime focus

Actor Rajinikanth on Sunday made it clear that he will not be contesting the Assembly byelections, scheduled to be held along with the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.

In February, Mr. Rajinikanth had put out a statement saying that he would not be contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and that his focus would be on the Assembly elections.

On Sunday, he was asked by reporters at the Chennai airport if he had any plans of contesting in the byelections and he replied in the negative.

The actor has held meetings with the district representatives of his organisation Rajini Makkal Mandram (RNM), which was set up as a launch vehicle for his proposed political party. He has remained non-committal about the formal launch of his party.

Mr. Rajinikanth had gone on record that neither he nor the RMM would back any party in the Lok Sabha elections and that no one should use his name or of the mandram during their campaign.
