With the aim of tapping renewable energy potential, the Railways commissioned a rooftop solar power grid system and two solar-powered water heaters at Tirupur railway station, on Tuesday.

The solar power grid of 2.88 Kilo Watt capacity was set up at an outlay of Rs. 3.13 lakh as a pilot project to generate about 13 units of electricity every day.

“More capacity will be added soon in the subsequent phases,” railway officials told The Hindu .

The power generated from the solar grid would be utilised for consumption at the ticket counters and station manager’s office at the railway station building. The water heated using the two solar-powered water heaters were to be used at the retiring rooms situated on the first platform.

Divisional Railway Manager (Salem division) Subhranshu said that the Railways would be soon setting up a medical booth at Tirupur station under public-private partnership mode.

This apart, a vegetarian refreshment stall is also planned at Tirupur, he added. A new waiting hall constructed at Rs. 43 lakh was inaugurated by Member of Parliament (Tirupur constituency) V. Sathyabama at the second platform in Tirupur station, on the day.
