Q Branch CID detains Sri Lankan national

Police personnel of the Q Branch CID detained a Sri Lankan Tamil who came to Arichalmunai in Danushkodi illegally from Sri Lanka by sea on Monday.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a Q Branch team detained the Sri Lankan national, identified as M. Arunraj, 24, while he was reaching the shore after getting dropped in the shallow waters off Arichalmunai, the southeastern tip of Rameswaram island, in the wee hours of Monday.

Upon being questioned, he said he had taken a fibreglass boat and paid 15,000 Sri Lankan rupees to the boatman to reach Arichalmunai. He was the lone traveller on the boat, and the boatman left after dropping him at the destination, he claimed. The Q Branch police said Arunraj was born and brought up in the refugee camp at Paramathi Velur in Namakkal district. His parents arrived here as refugees in the early 1990s. He left for his native village in Vavuniya with the help of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in November 2018, and decided to return after failing to get Sri Lankan citizenship and employment, the police said.

Arunraj said he had come back here to rejoin his grandmother, aunt and cousins, residing at the Paramathi Velur camp, the police said. His father was no more, and his mother had settled in Kuwait, they added. “There is no reason to be suspicious, and he has not come here with any ulterior motive,” a police officer said.

Arunraj will be handed over to the local police after being questioned by Q Branch Superintendent of Police G. Dharmarajan. The local police said the Sri Lankan national, who had no valid papers, will be arrested under the Passport (entry into India) Rules, 1950 and the Foreigners Act.
