Hundreds of people, including actors and spiritual leaders, gathered near the State Guest House on Wallajah Road on Monday evening condemning film lyricist Vairamuthu's recent remarks on Andal.

The protest was organised under the banner — Long Live Hindu Dharma, and was held for over two hours from 4 p.m. Actor Visu, Kutti Padmini, S.Ve. Shekar, several Jeeyars (Vaishnavite Pontiffs), Hindu Munani leader Rama Gopalan and others participated in the protest. Participants carried placards in praise of Andal and her pasurams .

“This is the first time such a crowd has gathered for such a purpose without any prior advertisement, banners or posters,” said Mr. Shekar. He added that the speakers made sure not to indulge in any mud-slinging, but the demands were very clear. “No one has the right to criticise another person’s faith. Mr. Vairamuthu should apologise in front of the Srivilliputhur temple,” he added.

Mr. Shekar said that passing remarks on Andal, the only woman among the 12 Vaishnavite saints, in her birth place, and that too during the month of Margazhi, which is associated with her, was completely unwarranted.
