Members of the All India Vellore Mutherayar Community Trust have presented petitions to Collector S.A. Raman and Superintendent of Police K. Pravesh Kumar demanding action against those who had circulated an audio clipping on a social messaging app which allegedly made derogatory comments about the women of their community.

Led by its president J. Saravanan, a large number of people belonging to the community came in a procession and organised a demonstration near the Collectorate on Monday.

‘Mischief mongers’

They presented separate petitions to the officials at the Collector Office and to the SP, urging them to interfere and initiate stringent action against the “mischief mongers”.

Mr. Saravanan said the audio clip was circulated on Thursday and created hatred against their community.

In the audio clip, two unidentified persons were engaged in a conversation making derogatory remarks against their community, particularly the women, he said. All India honorary president of the association, K.P. Arjunan said the clip which went viral in social media in the last three days, had terribly upset their community people, who always believed in peaceful and harmonious societal living.

Nearly two crore Mutherayar people lived in the State and they had resorted to agitations at several places after the audio went viral on social media.

If the culprits are not booked immediately, their community organisations would continue their protest, Mr. Arjunan added.
