Stating that escalating price of vegetables is posing hardship for the common public, members of Mahila Congress, the women’s wing of the Congress party, wore garlands made of vegetables and staged a protest near the Collectorate here on Monday.

Led by its urban district president Sarada Devi, the members said that the rising price of vegetables, particularly onion, were affecting the middle class people directly and condemned the Centre for its inaction.

The members also said that the government was not taking any steps to rein in the prices as vegetables and pulses were beyond the reach of common man.

They also condemned the State Government for failing to close the Tasmac outlets in the State.

They demanded that concrete action should be taken to curb the price rise and also to close the liquor outlets.

Erode

The members of Mahila Congress staged a demonstration in Erode district on Monday demanding rollback in prices of essential commodities.

The protesters led by former councillor Bhuvaneshwari held both the Central and State governments responsible for what they termed as the sufferings of poor people due to price rise.

About 150 Congress cadre, including over 100 women, took part in the protest that lasted for nearly an hour. District Congress Committee president E.P. Ravi, and other senior functionaries also took part.
