Condemning the irregularities in allotting tender for renovation of Rajavaikal canal at Komarapalayam in Paramathi Velur Taluk in Namakkal district, contractors staged a sit-in-protest at the office of Public Works Department here on Monday evening.

Contractors from Salem and Namakkal districts said that the tender was floated for cleaning and renovation of the canal by the PWD for carrying out works at a cost of Rs. 8 crore.

They said that 259 contractors have submitted their quotations in sealed enveloped that was expected to be opened at 3.30 pm on October 1. However, officials postponed the date and asked us to come on October 5, they added.

On Monday, when over 100 contractors approached the PWD officials they were informed that tenders will be allotted to six contractors as per a Minister’s recommendation. Angered by it, contractors attempted to enter the PWD office who were prevented by the police. They staged a sit-in-protest at the office entrance. Later, officials informed that the date for finalising the tender has been postponed to October 9.
